Day 10 - the new normal

Is anyone else starting to get used to this now? It's the new normal, staying in. I'm actually beginning to enjoy it. The days seem stress free (until Selina climbs on something she shouldn't or has a strop because she can't have something she shouldn't).

Selina has begun to have lovely lie ins, which means, we can too. Or we get to enjoy a cuppa before she wants to be up. She will happily lay awake in her cot, playing with her teddies and singing songs. She's content. Before all of this, she was spending three days a week in nursery, among other kids and making friends, practicing social skills, engaging with new activities. This is the thing that worries me - will she lose this? She has been forced into a situation whereby she can't have that interaction with other children. I hope that when this is all over, we can get her back into nursery and she can continue to learn and socialise.

Today's activity (it was for me not for Selina) was to make a salt dough rainbow and maybe some salt dough shapes for Selina to help her learn. This meant I got to play with my new food colouring!

It's so easy to make! Here is a recipe for a basic salt dough.

Makes 1 ball Prep 10 minutes Cook 3 hours

  • 1 cupful of plain flour (about 250g)

  • half a cupful of table salt (about 125g)

  • half a cupful of water (about 125ml)

Method

1. Preheat the oven to its lowest setting and line a baking sheet with baking parchment. 2. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the water and stir until it comes together into a ball. 3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and shape into your chosen model. You can roll it out and cut out shapes, numbers or letters using biscuit cutters, or make any kind of model you can think of.

4. Put your finished items on the lined baking sheet and bake for 3 hrs or until solid.

5. Leave to cool and then paint.

You can also leave the salt dough to air dry but this will take longer.

It's such a simple but fun activity to do with the kids (or on your own).

I think we are going to get out of the house tomorrow and go for a long walk (while adhering to social distancing) we have been meaning to explore the woods nearby since we moved here. Maybe we head that way. Fresh air here we come!

Come Saturday, I know I'm going to be in a not so great mood. Somebody remind me of how I felt today please? Saturday should have been the start of my hen weekend with the girls. A celebration.

We will have bigger things to celebrate when this is all over. Health and happiness, we are waiting for you.

How are YOU?

I don't know what day it is anymore and to be fair, I don't really care. What I care for is the time that I am spending with my family....
